Some countries established specialised research organisations that have a dedicated mission to address global challenges and support e.g. sustainable development in international cooperation partner countries.
Examples:
CIRAD, the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development, is an organization working for the sustainable development of tropical and Mediterranean regions. It is a public establishment (EPIC) under the joint authority of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation and the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs. Its activities concern the life sciences, social sciences and engineering sciences, applied to agriculture, food, the environment and territorial management. Its work centres on several main global challenges: food security, climate change, natural resource management, reduction of inequalities and poverty alleviation. CIRAD works with its partners in the global South to generate and pass on new knowledge to support agricultural development. It puts its scientific and institutional expertise at the disposal of policymakers in those countries and global debates on the main issues concerning agriculture. It also supports French scientific diplomacy operations.
Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) (Sweden) leverages knowledge and our convening power to strengthen water governance for a just, prosperous, and sustainable future. The idea that became Stockholm International Water Institute stems from three linked events in Stockholm in 1991 (the Stockholm Water Festival & Symposium and the Stockholm Water Prize). SIWI focuses on a range of research and development topics within and around water that supports decision-makers around the world. World Water Week, an expansion of Stockholm Water Symposium, is today the world’s leading annual water event, the Stockholm Water Prize the most prestigious water award, and the Stockholm Junior Water Prize fosters future generations of water excellence. SIWI has a focus on supporting cooperation with Africa in the field with regional and continental efforts to support future-oriented policies, research initiatives and institutional capacity development for more effective water management and development.
