Within the S4D4C project different exercises have been designed to enhance the participants’ interest in Science Diplomacy but also to provide them with more practical problem awareness, enable them to develop respective strategies, test them and receive direct feedback. Especially valuable in this regard are, for instance, small group discussions which we offer in the Ice-breaking interactive session (as an addition to the ice-breaking presentation), the exercise on negotiation skills (complementing the presentation on negotiation skills) and the case study on Water Diplomacy. While large group discussions often leave behind less confident participants, arranging participants in small groups enhances the learning effect for most members and thus helps students to improve their ability to articulate and defend a position thoughtfully and respectfully.
The case study “Water Diplomacy” can be also seen as a simulation game. Simulation exercises further increase the level of interactivity. They give participants the arena to take on different roles, find arguments and to try out a variety of options in order to approach a problem solution, whilst strongly improving their operational skills. Simulation games therefore allow the practice of conflict behaviour and the transfer of decisions into actions, but without being affected by the complications of reality. Additionally, we present you an empirically founded co-creation approach to exploring and understanding the contemporary topic of science diplomacy. With Co-creation Workshops you could provide a discussion space for different groups, e.g. scientists, policy makers and diplomats with expertise in the field of science diplomacy.
