Knowledge exchange sessions come with various advantages. First, as most regular lecture sessions have limited Q&A sessions, “information exchange” training provides the participants with the possibility to pose specific questions as the discussion proceeds and to receive answers in a more natural setting. Second, these sessions are explicitly open, providing the possibility to present personal opinions and allow for more in-depth knowledge-sharing. Finally, contrary to regular lectures where a session is led by one lecturer, modules aiming at knowledge exchange confront the audience with multiple expert opinions, providing different experiences, views, and insights into Science Diplomacy.
Against this background, two approaches appear particularly useful:
- On the one hand, there must be the possibility of an information exchange between the participants themselves. This will put different opinions, mind sets and ways of thinking on the table and thus enrich the participants’ overall perception of Science Diplomacy.
- On the other hand, participants should be brought together with actual practitioners and experts, thereby further clarifying how Science Diplomacy can be applied in real life. The chance to conduct effective and less rigid networking is an added bonus.
For these purposes, the S4D4C training collection proposes round-table discussions ( see Roundtable on careers in Science Diplomacy) which complements the Presentation on careers in Science Diplomacy) to more thoroughly debate certain Science Diplomacy topics, panel discussions (Diplomacy meets Science) with Science Diplomacy experts, debating both with each other and the participants, thereby representing a mixture of explanation and dialogue, and study trips to relevant locations that illustrate the practical necessity and “how-to” of Science Diplomacy (Study trips). Additionally, we offer recommendation on how to establish a stakeholder mapping in Science Diplomacy (Science Diplomacy Stakeholders).
